Support Acknowledgement of a Celebration

Monday, October 5th, 2009

Over the last year, I have been working on a project called An Acknowledgement of a Celebration:Inheritance,Authenticity and Healing. This project is a 9 movement orchestral suite that features musicians, modern dancers and breakdancers in collaboration. The work will premiere this year on November 8 to close the Earshot Jazz Festival.

I feel that we are shifting to a model where the relationship between audience, artist and venue is a truly collaborative one and the understanding is that one cannot work or be experienced without the other. This being said, it is with great enthusiasm and humilty that I ask for your assistance in getting this project off the ground. I along with the help of some creative and loving friends and the folks at Earshot Jazz are coming up with different ways to raise funds. Efforts ranging from fundraiser concerts, micropatronage, a drink at LUCID to selling the notes of the score. I deeply want all involved to know that this project is theirs. I wish to present this in the most full and beautiful way possible and with your help I trust that we can.

Micropatronage is a system in which the public directly supports the work of others by making donations through the Internet. It relies on the premise that it is easier to find many “patrons” to donate small amounts, rather than a small number of patrons making larger contributions.

To entice you to become a patron, I have come up with some packages that are all unique to this program. It is my hope that you will find one of them interesting enough to be willing to donate a small amount of your hard-earned money to help me complete this project.

I’ve set up PayPal buttons to make it easier, but if you’d rather send a check just scroll down to the end of the post and you’ll find the mailing address.

Acknowledgement of a Celebration

As part of the 2009 Earshot Jazz Festival, Seattle bassist and composer Evan Flory-Barnes presents a world premiere titled “Acknowledgement of a Celebration: Inheritance, Authenticity and Healing,” a large-ensemble fusion of jazz, hip-hop, and classical music, complete with modern dancers and freestyle break-dancers. A standout in Seattle’s jazz scene, Flory-Barnes’ acoustic double bass skills, a combination of improvisation and classical training, have been featured in collaborations ranging from Brazilian pianist Jovino Santos Neto to hip-hop band Maroon Colony. Commissioned as part of a national series of works from Meet the Composer’s Commissioning Music/USA program, Acknowledgement of a Celebration is performed as a nine-movement orchestral cycle with 35 musicians and 10 dancers.
